Glen Gadsby’s “Esteemed Award of Honour”

Some of you may have read in our Hall of Fame about Glen Gadsby who was a dog handler with the RAAF. His work with white GSDs was a wonderful promotion for the breed and gained a lot of exposure. In early 2010, we were informed that Mr Gadsby was very ill and decided that we’d like to give him a tribute, on behalf of the WGSDAV, for the part he has played in promoting white shepherds. We awarded him the “Esteemed Award of Honour”.

We dedicate this Award to you for all your wonderful work with Rip (Police Dog 41) and June (Police Dog 251) and promoting the white German Shepherd Dog as a RAAF high-calibre working dog in Australia. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. With the utmost love and respect, from the White German Shepherd Dog Alliance of Victoria

Letter to Mr Gadsby presenting him the Award

Dear Glen,

We would like to present to you our first and only “Esteemed Award of Honour” for all your achievements, service, dedication and commitment over the years to your white German Shepherd Dogs, and the positive spotlight you have shone on our breed over the years.

As you know, the white coat colour has been plagued by misconceptions and discrimination, with German Shepherd Clubs and breeders stating that they aren’t a good companion and working dog because of their colour. From comments such as “They are albinos... They have a bad temperament... They are degenerate throwbacks... They lack the ability to work” etc. You Glen, have proven all of them wrong.

We know that training a working dog takes a lot of time, patience and requires a close bond with your dog. A good dog isn’t just “born”. A good dog is the result of the handler understanding canine behaviour and mentality, patience, time, dedication and training. With all your many achievements with Police dogs Rip and June, it is clear that you excelled in all of these things.

We know that you were hugely committed during your career with the RAAF, with over 20 years of service with them. You received a British Empire Medal for service in training Security Guards and Police Dogs in 1978. You received a Certificate of Outstanding Service - while serving in Operational Command, in 1974. These achievements during your career are an inspiration to all of us.

The publicity you created with your dogs, has reflected very positively on the breed. It has also inspired many owners to work with their dogs in several working disciplines, such as obedience, agility, tracking, herding and schutzhund.

You truly have had such a wonderful effect on our members and other White German Shepherd Dog owners – not just in Australia, but worldwide!

We dedicate this Award to you for all your wonderful work with Rip (Police Dog 41) and June (Police Dog 251) and promoting the white German Shepherd Dog as a RAAF high-calibre working dog in Australia.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. With the utmost love and respect, from all the members of White German Shepherd Dog Alliance of Victoria

In October 2010, we received the following photo in an engraved photo frame from Mr Gadsby:

Brooke Taylor’s “Breed Service Award”

0P1020124.jpgCongratulations to Brooke Taylor, who received a surprise award in appreciation for all her hard work and dedication to the WGSD community, on 30th January, 2010 at a club get together at Brighton Dog Beach.

For those of you who couldn't make it, this was the speech given.

For those of you that don’t know, Brooke’s journey into the breed began by falling in love with the WGSD. Throughout Brooke’s reach of the breed she learned of how the WGSD’s were being very cruelly and commonly culled at birth, also learning that because of this very cruel practice, just how close to extinction the WGSD became. For 2 years Brooke perused the media, creating public awareness of the controversial WGS, and promoted the dogs as equals to the black and tanned GSD.

In 2002, due to the media frenzy Brooke created, the GSDC of Australia removed the culling cluse from their documents. This alone was a huge step for the breed, enabling it to begin to flourish!

But Brooke did not stop there.

Brooke went on to found the Australian club and original Stud Book for whites and white gene carriers in Australia, all the while developing her kennel, Neigepearl. She also found and rescued several whites from death row, placing them in great forever homes, and made rescue a free service of the WGSDAV.

Brooke then went on to becoming one of the first Australian, and worldwide breeders to breed for overall temperament, health and conformation of the breed, always striving to improve the quality of the WGSD. Brooke was also one of the first of today’s breeders to breed whites with coloured GSD’s, working towards increasing the scarce bloodlines in Australia, and overseas. Brooke also went on to create the WGSD Alliance of Victoria, a network of WGSD owners, brought together by their love of the breed.

Today, along with her fantastic breeding program, and running the WGSDAV, Brooke continues her work of educating the public on the WGSD also work alongside other likeminded WGSD enthusiasts like herself to better further the quality of the breed for many generations to come.

For the past 10 years Brooke has poured her heart and soul into the WGSD breed and the breeding program within Australia. Selflessly sacrificing her time to help others, spending hours upon hours of hard work and dedication, without so much as any recognition for all her hard work and effort.

So on behalf of the members of the WGSDAV, we would like to formally say a VERY BIG thank to Brooke, without all her hard work, I hesitate to think of where this wonderful breed will be today.

Brooke I’d like to present this plaque to you in appreciation for your hard work and dedication to the WGSD community. Thank you!
